ITWF Progress Report 4:
Results from the CPS – IT and Control Group Comparisons

Prepared by Brandon Dupont

This revision: 25 February 2003

Defining a Control Group

The objective in defining an appropriate control group is to identify a set of occupations from the CPS data with similar education and age levels. Ideally, we would like to establish a group that had the ability (in terms of intelligence or education, for instance) to go into an IT career but chose not to do so.

I have taken four groupings of occupations from the CPS as a first estimation toward a possible focus group. The four groupings can be categorized as follows:

  1. Scientific Occupations
  2. Managerial Occupations
  3. Other Technical Occupations
  4. Miscellaneous Occupations

The total size of this control group is currently estimated at 20.9 million. I describe the specific occupations within each grouping on page 5.

Graph of Control Group Size

The objective in forming a control group is to find a set of CPS occupations that is closely related to the characteristics of the identified IT workforce. I have examined this along a number of dimensions beginning on page 6.

Comparisons: IT and Control Groups

I summarize here some of the major characteristics of interest for both the total control group and the IT occupations from the March 2002 CPS.
