CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITY

University of Kansas

Kauffman Foundation Research Grants
and Pre-proposal and Literature Review Grants

MISSION

The KU Center for Research in Entrepreneurial Activity (CREA) promotes high caliber research on entrepreneurial activity in Kansas and the surrounding region that will contribute both to scholarly understanding of the issues surrounding the extent and nature of entrepreneurial activity and suggest policy actions and interventions to encourage entrepreneurial initiatives.

Kansas and the Great Plains are not generally viewed as hotbeds of innovation and entrepreneurship. But the region is quite diverse, and the overall lack of innovative activity conceals some concentrations of entrepreneurship, and some areas that might potentially contribute to future entrepreneurship.

The Center will encourage research that places regional entrepreneurship in its broader national and international perspective, while also examining variations in entrepreneurial activity within the region. There is clearly a need for both better and more precise facts about what kinds of activities are taking place in the region, and for research into both the inducements for and obstacles to greater levels of entrepreneurship.

The directors of the Center are:

PROGRAMS

The primary activity of the center is to provide funding for University of Kansas Faculty. Through the generosity of the Kauffman Foundation, the Center has been able to establish two grant programs:
  1. Research grants are intended to support work intended for a top journal or other prominent academic outlet, or to lead to a proposal for additional funding from another external agency to support projects of a larger scope than those funded by the Center. The grants will typically provide support for summer salary and other needs relevant for a major research project (e.g., research assistance, data, or travel), the average award will be approximately $30,000.
  2. Pre-proposals or literature reviews are intended to allow a scholar to survey and get acquainted with an area but without the expectation of a research publication. The pre-proposals or literature reviews will receive funding of $2,000.
In addition the Center supports events that will promote scholarly interchange and the dissemination of information arising out of research projects conducted by researchers at the University of Kansas and elsewhere.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Interested faculty at the University of Kansas are invited to apply for funding from the Center to support their work. Applications for both research grants and pre-proposal support will be accepted on a rolling basis. Application materials and instructions may be downloaded using the links provided below.
